In Paradis with Bach
Each generation has its models in the interpretation of the Bach Suites, and in today’s panorama, Jean-Guihen Queyras is a reference. Six Years Ago he recorded a version for Harmonia Mundi playing a gorgeous sounding instrument, Gioffredo Cappa’s Cello from1696, with which he captivated the Barcelonian audience yesterday, in a memorable concert at the Palau de la Musica.
Alone with Bach, surrounded by the dimly lit muses of the Palau’s stage,Queyras totally dazzled the more than 1,400 spectators. What Jean-Guihen Queyras produced in the Palau was pure sound magic.
He managed to hook the listener with ease and sense of balance, without forcing the natural sound of the cello in search of violent contrasts. The elegance of the French school, the attention to details and delight in the nuances, all this converted his musical speech intoa unique experience.
Queyras can translate Bach’s universe with honesty and deep spirituality.
Many viewers followed his interpretation with closed eyes, bewitched by Bach and the delicate art of a cellist who was able to take us to paradise for two hours.
